A Summer's Reading: Post - Reading | page 49

-George's diary-

8/6/1932

Today in the morning I woke up at seven.  I ate cereals for breakfast. I read  the newspaper and listened to music on the radio. Later, l decided to help Sophie, so I cleaned the house.
In the afternoon, l wanted to get out of the house. I was walking on the street and bought lemonade because it was so hot. When it got darker, I sat on a bench and saw a couple holding hands. I started to imagine how my girlfriend would look like. At 11pm I came back home.
I didn't have such a great day. I got tired of my boring routine. I want
something interesting to happen in my life. Today was another ordinary day

9/6/1932

Today I overslept, so I woke up at eleven. I ate a breakfast and thought what should I do today. At 12pm I started to read a little bit, but I got bored. I listened to the radio and just calmed. After I had eaten my lunch, I went off to the street. I walked and met Mr. Cattanzara. He asked me about the books I was supposed to read. I was a bit ashamed, but I lied to him and said that I really enjoyed reading them. Later, I sat on a bench at the park and I imagined again the good life I wanted to have. At 12am I came back home, watched TV and went to sleep.

Summer's reading - Bridging | page 49

The information about Bernard Malamud added to my understanding of the story in some ways. Bernard Malamud wrote about immigrants and the characters in "Summer's
reading" are immigrants from different countries, who try to earn a living in New York.

Bernard Malamud often wrote about isolated people. In "A Summer's reading" the main character is George, a poor boy who dropped out of school. He dreams about a better life. He is a loner and he doesn't have friends. Most of his day he spends in his room and his
nights he spends at the park. In order to improve his life, he must study and get a good education. Mr. Cattanzara helps him to do that; he speaks with him about books. Mr. Cattanzara helps George because he loves him and he remindes him of himself

"A Summer's reading" was written about poor people during the depression time. The poor immigrants were trying to attain the American middle – class dream. In order to do that, they must have an education to get a good job.
